Day 21 - West Mainland

Started the day with the Kirkwall parkrun.  Lovely sunny day.  Finished 51st out of 78 but when the results came out I had been given the wrong time.  I did it in about 28:46 but my official time was 29:41, so nearly a minute slower.  I think the lady in front of me got my time and an 'unknown' got her time.  I reported it to the Kirkwall team and they have now sorted it and given me position 50 out of 77 with a time of 28:45 so my best time this year and 3rd best time ever.   It is the first time in 109 parkruns that this has happened so really not bad at all.   A few more tourists here this week, some even from Australia.  It was much brighter but still windy.

After showering and a coffee we drove to Yesnaby on the west coast of Mainland.  We had been recommended doing a cliff walk here by the cycle hire shop.  It wasnt a long walk, distance wise, but took ages as we kept stopping to admire the scenery and take photos. We first went north to a bay about 1km away.  We saw 2 seals here.

We went back to the car for our lunch and then walked south where there are some amazing sandstone structures.  I would like to have walked further south but it was very windy and Paul was ready to get back to the car.

Before going back to the lodge, we stopped to take photos at a road sign that we thought didnt exist.  Had to be done

We had a really good Orkney Ice Cream at an Ice Cream Parlour on the main Kirkwall to Stromness road which is tucked away and I only noticed by chance.  There are very few shops outside Kirkwall and Stromness and none at all on the islands that we visited so it was really strange to see an Ice Cream Parlour.

The wind really got strong after we got back so we had our dinner watching the high tide and the birds on the Bay of Firth.
